The University’s academic maritime students will have the opportunity to gain valuable practical experience through cadetship placements on-board FRS ferries, while also receiving financial support through sponsorship options. Upon completion of their studies, employment opportunities will also be available for these students, ensuring a smooth transition into the workforce. In addition, the University of Gibraltar Maritime Academy will deliver a Ratings course for FRS employees, which will provide a Certificate in Maritime Studies upon completion. The Academy will also provide FRS crew with STCW training and a range of bespoke operational training courses, including Operational Fire Fighting. The University Language Centre will also provide a Maritime English Course for all FRS Crew, aiming to ensure effective communication and safety on-board. University of Gibraltar Maritime Academy The University of Gibraltar Maritime Academy provides UK-aligned, MCA-approved maritime STCW training, tailored training for companies, and bespoke training for the fast-evolving maritime industry. As a result, the Academy is providing an increasing number of courses to many of the operators who are part of the 20,000 crew changes made in Gibraltar every year FRS FRS can look back on a shipping history of more than 150 years. Since then, FRS has developed from a regional passenger shipping company to an internationally active group of companies and is today one of the leading specialists in the field of ferry shipping in Europe. FRS runs around 70 vessels and has more than 1,500 employees worldwide. The shipping company operates numerous national and international ferry and catamaran connections and transports around 7.4 million passengers and 1.7 million vehicles per year.
University of Gibraltar The University of Gibraltar is a UK-aligned degree-awarding higher education institution, established by the Government of Gibraltar through the University of Gibraltar Act 2015. In 2022, the University received global accreditation from the UK Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA). As part of its provision, the University offers a BSc (Hons) Maritime Science with Cadetship programme (Nautical or Engineering), which combines academic qualifications with practical training through MNTB-aligned, MCA-approved, guaranteed placements. Students can choose their pathway, be that at sea (nautical or engineering) or shore side, and graduate with the necessary skills and knowledge to enter the maritime industry and succeed.
